Donna Summer’s 1977 double album Once Upon A Time marked the peak of her studio relationship with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, it’s segued second side presaging electronic music by years with its pulsing grooves and flickering synthesised textures. Back then it was simply too far ahead of its time, even in a world which had just been poleaxed by ‘I Feel Love’.
Overlooked for years but a private obsession for many, the album’s been crying out for recognition and former LCD Soundsystem singer Nancy and PBR Streetgang’s Boner have done a magnificent job in capturing the song’s poignant melancholy against a sparkling backdrop of electronic disco heaven, delivered with all the necessary dynamics for modern dancefloors.
There’s a radio edit, glistening Extended workout and panoramic Disco version which will make many senior disco devotees very happy but, at the same time, packs all the ingredients required to demolish modern hothouse dancefloors. Maybe now the world will catch up.
