Video Premiere: Monokle – Backwash

St. Petersburg’s Monokle has dropped his new album, Rings, via Ki Records. A haunting, noise-encrusted vision of electronica, Rings really impressed us here in the DT office, so we thought we’d jump in on the action and secured the premiere to LP track, ‘Backwash’.

Taking influence from early-20th-century French composer Erik Satie, Monokle crafts ghostly ambient worlds, occasionally peppering them with aspects of contemporary dance, until they feel more like faded memories of past nights out.

One of the more club-friendly pieces on the 11-track album, ‘Backwash’ offers an intense listening experience. Building upon an eerily foreboding sparseness, the track becomes ever more oppressive, yet somehow manages to maintain a euphoric atmosphere – like a brief asphyxiated high or the moment of joy when you surface from a dive. The accompanying video uses ordinary objects such as charcoal, leaves, shells and pebbles to create a visual representation of this alien soundscape, whilst the mysterious, submerged vibe is turned quite literal through footage of a swimmer in dark waters.
