Renegade Riddims: Spektral

Share

We’ve decided to do something a little bit different with our usual Renegade Riddims mixes going forward. Once a month a mix will be created by an artist who is local to us in Milton Keynes. This will cover neighbouring towns such as Bedford, Buckingham, Northampton, Leighton Buzzard and more. We’re kicking off the “Support Local” editions today with Spektral.

Spektral (formally known as DJ Liquid) began his journey in Drum & Bass in early 2007, with the hosting of his night ‘UK Meltdown’, bringing names such as Nicky Blackmarket, Phantasy, UK Apache, Shabba D, MC Fearless, General Levy, Hoodlum, and Phantom to his hometown of Leighton Buzzard. He had started out mixing all styles of music from Hip Hop to Garage to Drum & Bass, bringing about the DJ name of Liquid with the ability to blend genres but later on decided that a new more professional name which mirrors his mixing style, Spektral seemed perfect.

You can expect a full range of different styles in his set and you will never know what to expect. During his journey, he was signed to Pure Promotions artist agency and Random Concept Academy. He held residencies for Contagious, Explosive Elements, Motion and for Conflicted Bass, a night of which he promotes. Over the years, Spektral moved into the sound system culture of free parties and has played on various systems over the years, landing him a residency for Diatribe sound system and mighty multi-genre Tearout, whilst also being a regular for various other promotions.

Through the years, he has played at such events as Innovation (London), Random Concept (Northampton), Illusive (Corby), Subrockerz (Northampton), RAM (High Wycombe), Bris-tek (Bristol), Boombap (Millden hall), Lean (Amsterdam), Rumpelbude (Germany) Telepathy (London), Embodied Audio (Northampton) Revolt Sounds (Milton Keynes) Explosive Elements (Northampton), Outer Limits (Exeter), Sticky (London), Genetic (Leicester), Unity (London, Luton) Epidemik (St Albans) and Drum Major (Milton Keynes) among others. Now he continually receives bookings supporting names such as Andy C, Fabio & Grooverider, Mampi Swift, Ed Solo, Total Science, Jaguar Skills, Friction, Hype, Marcus Intalex, Hazard, Sigma, T.C, Taxman, Sub Zero, Garry K, Ray Keith, Ruffstuff, Maztek, Emperor,  Brookes Brothers with the support of MCs Harry Shotta, Eskman, Fearless, Shabba, Skibadee (RIP), Messy, Presha, Juiceman MC and many more.

You can also keep an eye out for his productions with him having his first release on Jaxx‘s imprint, Train Recordings. He is also co-owner of Rabbeat Records with Herb Doc, which has had releases from Dub Motion, Morah & Locustlung and Content Confusion. The label is dormant at the moment but there are plans brewing for a comeback. He is currently focused on a group project called System Check, which is a collective of three artists Blair Grylls, AON and himself. This was born out of being booked together in parts or in full over the years and deciding to make it official after playing together at Illusive Festival with IC3. Keep an eye out for what’s to come from them in the future!

Today we welcome Spektral to our Renegade Riddims series with a big, high energy mix that weighs in at over 1 hour long and will definitely get you bouncing! Expect to hear tracks from the likes of himself, Conrad Subs, Zombie Cats, DJ Hazard, Furniss, DJ Fresh, Aphrodite, Watch The Ride, Sub Focus, Change of Pace, Mrs Magoo & DJ Hybrid and loads more!

“With this mix, I decided to include some personal favourites and showcase some unreleased music from my hometown of Leighton Buzzard, including my own. You can expect a full journey of ups and downs with high energy or rolled out mixes using the full spectrum of Drum & Bass. Hope you enjoy!”
