Renegade Riddims: Mrs Magoo

Junglists…Are you ready?! One of the best Jungle DJs of recent times joins our Renegade Riddims series. With three nominations and one award for Best Female DJ at the We Love Jungle Awards, appearances with Kenny Ken on both Origin and Rough Tempo, monthly shows with Bellyman, dates lined up across the US and a tonne of b2b sets with pioneers of the genre such as Nicky Blackmarket and Garry K, welcome Mrs Magoo!!!

Mrs Magoo plays unmistakeable sets, which are built on a foundation of smooth-rolling Drum & Bass and crashing Amens and are liberally sprinkled with Ragga and when combined with her impeccable style, both on and off the decks and her infectious energy it’s easy to see how she’s making a mark.

But it’s been a journey getting to where she is…

It all kicked off for her way back when she was just 8 years old and borrowing tape packs from her dad. These came from the sounds of Helter Skelter, Accelerated Culture and Sidewinder which have all played just a part of the musical influences she absorbed growing up. When coupled with the punk and rock her mum loved, it has given her a solid foundation from which to draw her sound.

In 2006 at 17 years old she was hitting her first rave – Rebirth. Soon after that, she got her hands on a pair of 1210s, back then though her sound of choice was happy hardcore. After a weekly internet radio show led to some bookings, Mrs Magoo found herself increasingly drawn to the sounds of Jungle and Drum & Bass and by 2013 she was a certified Junglist. That year saw her playing her first headline show at Jungle Nation in Aberdeen, one of Scotland’s longest-running Jungle nights.

Joining Deep In The Jungle Records and holding down residencies at Jungle Splash London, Unity Edinburgh and Better Breakbeat Bureau USA have helped her carve out a name for herself. She’s now taken things full circle; from early days listening to mixtapes – to making her own. From a bright-eyed young raver taking her first tentative steps into Rebirth, to performing at Glastonbury Festival the largest greenfield festival in the world.

Mrs Magoo is still just beginning though because she’s got big plans! She recently launched her own line of merchandise (check out the range here), is producing her own music and has been receiving more and more international bookings.

I’ve had my eye on Mrs Magoo for some time now, her sets are so full of energy they put an instant smile on my face. When you watch her on a live stream she clearly loves what she does and it resonates with whoever is watching her, immediately brightening up their day! If you don’t already have her on your radar then after listening to her Renegade Riddims mix I guarantee you will!
