Pretty Lights Cracks Album Charts Despite Offering It As A Free Download…

Over the years many musicians have given away albums for free so when Pretty Lights announced he’d be making his album available completely gratis via his website we were more pleased than surprised. What it surprising however is despite the producers generosity in making the album available as a free download that it has still continued to sell well in physical copies with ‘A Color Map Of The Sun’ cracking the US top 30 album chart this week, entering at a more than respectable number 24.

Furthermore, as a vinyl package sales of the new album were high enough to see the LP displace the mega selling Daft Punk album Random Access Memories  to become the USA’s best selling vinyl of the week.

It’s not the first time an artist has been commercially successful by giving away free content  with many comic book writers finding sales actually skyrocketed when they made their work available for free download and in 2009 Nine Inch Nails giving their album ‘The Slip’ away for free online but still managing to sell enough copies to hit the number 13 spot on the billboard charts.

We think it’s great that fans are choosing to support their favorite artists and hope to see more high quality free albums make their way onto release in the future.

You can buy or download it over on his website.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
