Raver Conrad Subs’ Choice
Jungle has been enjoying a resurgence recently with loads of new talents coming through. One of these fresher faces is Conrad Subs. He’s been dropping loads of fresh music and steadily rising up the ranks – he was even nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’ at last years We Love Jungle Awards.
Recently he returned to DJ Hybrid’s Deep In The Jungle imprint with a killer EP, ‘Raver’s Choice’. He unleashes 6 mad tracks covering all the subtleties jungle had to offer. Spoiler alert, it’s big!
He kicks things off with a huge collaboration with Hybrid, ‘Rinse It’. Locking down so much swing and swagger before moving to the title track ‘Raver’s Choice’. Eastern vibes are quickly drum-rolled into a text book jungle smasher with roaring bass, clashing drums and a quality vocal hook. ‘Rough Beats’ follows bringing some funky flavour before flipping to some proper 90s era styled jungle beat, one for the skankers!
Spacey vibes glide you into ‘Imperial Roots’ but that switch up bangs hard. Easing ever so slightly off the gas, ‘Through My Eyes’ has a smooth vocal sitting nicely over a rumbling bassline. Wrapping up the EP is ‘Sound Fi Dead’ another collab, this time with Speaker Louis. A proper stomper that’ll leave a serious dent on the floors.
‘Raver’s Choice’ EP is just Conrad Subs’ latest assault on our speakers, joining a long list of releases this year on labels including Liondub International, Nuusic and Soulvent Records. The EP is sure to be a solid choice from the raver’s, though we decided to get him to select 5 massive jungle tunes. Raver Conrad Subs’ Choices. He’s gone in big, and we’re not even mad. Pre-warn your neighbours cos these are all big, bad and heavy!
‘Mr. Majestic’ – Calibre & High Contrast
As close to perfection as Drum & Bass Jungle has ever been by two of my favourite artists. I love the way this track uses the samples so cleverly, it works as a listening track and a club dancefloor tune. I still play it out all the time.
‘Threshold’ – Dillinja
Dillinja is easily my biggest influence and although it’s tough to call, I’d say this is my favourite track of his.
I love the atmosphere and the fact that it’s so distorted haha, he put the vibe first in this tune, whereas today I think in some cases the production comes before the music. Nobody does it like Dillinja.
‘Code Red’ – Conquering Lion
One of my favourite Jungle tracks from back in the day. I first heard this on one of the Jungle Mania compilations when I was at school, and I just love the vocal samples and energy. Back then there would be 4 or 5 track ideas in one tune, this one still gets me moving.
‘Pulp Fiction’ – Alex Reece
This one still sounds fresh to me, the prototype for future Drum & Bass. I remember nothing sounding like this when it was released, that two step beat standing out and that warping, reverse – like bass. This is another track that bridges liquid sounds with dancefloor toughness.
‘Down 4’ – Clipz
A more recent one that I love, great to have Clipz back – and even better on a jungle tip. I love the stripped back, raw feel to this one, with the breaks and bass etc. And those GQ and Brandy vocals setting things off perfectly.
