Red Sky drop ‘Colony’ EP on Lockdown Recordings

Share

Lockdown Recordings are a Bristol based label who’ve been grafting to build a roster which stands up against those imprints established in the earlier days. Promoting the deeper side of the dance music spectrum, they’ve always adhered to the same paradigm. That is, to offer only forward-thinking, technical and rolling vibes for the heads.

Lockdown Recordings again build on their reputation for breaking new talent. This time bringing you the debut EP on the label from Red Sky. This is a brand-new project from Birmingham based regular, Zerosum and Mark Stevenson. Red Sky share an appreciation for music that’s tense and paranoid. It’s characterised by a futuristic sensibility but with a human soul. Musically they are bringing 90’s techstep up to date, with influences across Drum & Bass, soundtrack, alternative and electronica.

The EP opens with the title track and our premiere for today ‘Colony’. Arpeggiated synths and pads set the tone for the EP, a cold futuristic vibe that switches into tight programmed rolling breaks and bass.

Next up ‘Keep Lying’ really takes you by surprise and is a perfect example of the unique sound of this new outfit. Vocal textures, hats and break edits build rhythmically in the intro. Then it drops hard into raw bass stabs, half time drums and strings.

‘Mercury Rising’ is the third cut on the EP and sees Barry Gration step in on guitar, providing layers of ambience and effects in the intro before pulsing out in another halftime flex. This then builds slowly with intricate layers of synth stabs and jungle drum breaks.

‘Stolen Hours’ closes out the EP. Atmospheric plucked guitar samples creates an almost Balearic vibe that switches nicely into tight stepping drums, deep bass and tuned percussion hits.

Red Sky have certainly grabbed people’s attention with this new EP and we hear there’s plenty more from the duo in the pipeline!

Check out our premiere of Red Sky ‘Colony’ below. The EP drops as a Beatport exclusive on 17th August and everywhere else on 31st August. Grab it from here!
