Liz E- The Last Time/ Something Inside

Label: SGN:LtdScore: 7/10

After releasing a couple of tracks on Jaydan’s Smoking Riddims label last year as well as a couple of dubstep tempo bits, new girl on the block Liz Welch aka Liz E has stepped up to Shogun Audio’s sister label SGN:Ltd with a solid debut single for the imprint.

Kicking off proceedings with ‘The Last Time’, it’s a real hands in the air euphoric slice of dancefloor led liquid drum and bass. Bringing rolling amen’s and a piano line which is fairly reminiscent of Moby’s mega smash hit Porcelain, its pleading vocal sample adds a raw touch of emotion to the tune. Although it’s a style and sound that’s been done more than a few times in the past, (think of S.P.Y.’s epic ‘By Your Side’ or Chase & Status’ ‘Hurt You’ as close examples) I don’t see it as a bad thing as Liz-E’s effort does similarly well here.

The flip, ‘Something Inside’, is the real pick of this 12” for me. Soulful and steppy, it’s simple in its execution but sometimes thats all a good tune need to be. The lush vocals are used to great effect with a bassline that gently hugs the ears. It’s a tune that would sound nice in the mix or just to listen to as standalone track. Vibes are definitely the order of the day on ‘Something Inside’, prompting more than few repeated listens from this reviewer.

Getting a release on SGN:LTD is a good look for Liz-E. Two very good tracks that should push her name more to the attention of D&B heads in 2013. Her fledgling career is still only just starting out but more tracks of this calibre will only further her aims and ambitions.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
