Dubspeeka – Leaving Home
Label: DEXT RecordingsRelease: 14/4/14
DEXT Recordings is a new label with an agenda that veers towards tough house aesthetics, the likes of which is still discerning and never panders to a generic tech-house formula. On their debut outing this all comes to fruition with some elegance, with eclectic British tastemaker Dubspeeka giving us a fitting introduction into his own off-kilter talents.
Opening the EP is ‘Leaving Home’, a moody track that’s curated on an analogue tip that’s notable for its booming, majestic bassline and the manner by which it lets various different soundscapes play off one another. An intricately produced number, it sets its stall out in relentless fashion. ‘Special Occasion’ is more downtrodden and ominous, with its broken beats and its cascading drumwork marking it out as a heady and intoxicating dancefloor cut.
‘Creature Funk’ is notable for its foreboding nous, and Komon & Appleblim’s heavyweight remix of it goes some way to justifying the hype surrounding those two right now. Komon then leaves his mark on ”Leaving Home” with a snare-induced take that twists, turns and leaves you in a spin by the time it fully unfurls. An EP of many different guises it may be, but each one is worth embracing here.
