Chroma – Grindhouse

One of D&B’s consistently impressive production teams of this year, Newcastle lads Chroma make their return to Program with another single teaming one piece of gritty dance floor energy with some sublime vibes to accompany it.

With its shuffling 2 step drums, celestial bleeps and buzz saw style lead synth melody, Grindhouse is appropriately rugged. Piercing its way into your synapses and never letting go, the breakdown of the track is the only moment of calm in the storm. No other description of Grindhouse is more fitting that the term ‘banger’, plain and simple.

The real gem of this package for me lies in its AA side. If You Only Knew, with its chunky yet rolling drums and subtle piano notes, presents itself with bags of soul. The vocal sample adds an extra dimension every few bars and the sub bass sits nicely underneath holding it all and binding it together at the same time. If You Only Knew lends itself slightly to their opening Program release So Alone. Warm, musical and production quality that is A* standard.

It’s been a good 2013 for Chroma in terms of their output and their second outing on Program is no different. The beauty of the AA side track If You Only Knew make this single a welcome addition to any DJ’s collection.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
