Christian Nielsen – Shades EP
Label: Play it DownScore: 8/10
Christian Nielsen is a producer who knows his way around the studio – a fact that’s laid bare through the two intricate cuts that comprise his latest outing for the always unpredictable (and equally tough-to-pigeonhole), Play it Down label. Indeed, the production values are of the utmost quality here, with both tracks nonetheless notable for very different reasons.
Mind you, they’re still very much cut out for the floor, as is definitely the case on Nielsen’s opening gambit, ”Push”. Locked-down grooves play a focal role throughout, but it’s the completely unrelenting vocal and the underbelly of punchy drums and spiky synths that cause the greatest surprise. ”Slick”, meanwhile, does exactly as it says on the tin, with the momentum stirred up by its baby brother not letting go for even one minute. If anything, it actually all gets even more intense, as off-kilter samples and rubbery kicks face off against a torrent of delay effects and ‘peak-time’ capabilities. Seriously expert stuff from a man we expect to hear much more of in the future.
