Night Train with Derrick May, DJ Pierre, Leftwing & Kody – Egg, London

It was back in October that EGG launched their brand new soiree Night Train, and did so to a great reception and with some fine DJs. It has proved just one of many feathers in the club’s bow this year after some terrific celebrations for the 10th birthday back in the early part of the year as well as some touch ups to the club’s sound system – which has been getting vocal props from people like Boddika and Danny Tenaglia. Tonight it was all about house and techno heritage with the main men being Derrick May and DJ Pierre.

As soon as we arrived the place was nicely busy, no doubt because everyone had heard about the Night Train launch and has been keen to get in on the action themselves. There was a good mix of young UK dance heads and international clubbers too, likely thanks to the wise bookings that spanned the ages.

Also worth noting was the fact the club has been decked out with extra production that includes lasers and custom graphics on various LED screens (themed around moustaches as it was Movember). It meant that in tandem with the great and vocal atmosphere that run through the club, senses were tingling not only because of the music, but the lighting, too, which all added an extra great dimension to proceedings.

As for the music, it was killer from the off: James Silk served up a great set on the ground floor early on, only to be followed by Leftwing & Kody who laid down a much darker set of involving tech. It was deep, too, and full of energy, meaning that the floor was heaving all night long.  For us though, the main draw was the legends on the middle floor.

From 3 til 5am we were treated to an absolute master class from acid house pioneer and Chicago native DJ Pierre. He played some ferocious techno, the odd standout classic and really bounced about with some vigour in the DJ booth, His energy was mirrored on the dancefloor and the serious bass on his tracks make great use of the soundsytem.

Up next, from 5 – 7am was techno inventor and Detroit hero Derrick May. The man played his signature techno sounds – emotional strings, widescreen and super soulful synths and hypnotic beats that take you to another planet. He had a very concentrated and focused look when playing but it made for an enthralling soundtrack all night long. Night Train’s a great new jewel in EGG’s crown, and well worth checking for discerning dance fans everywhere.
