Monkey Safari – Sensation

Monkey_Safari_Sensation_Artwork.jpgLabel: HIVE AudioScore: 8/10

German producers Monkey Safari have really hit their stride recently, with their many fun and scrupulously produced records earning them a nice little niche with the electronic music environs. Their latest EP, however, mind just be one of their best yet, with ‘Sensation’ —their solo debut for Swiss imprint HIVE Audio—a record that speaks to those who like that house music with more than a smattering of cheeky brilliance.

The title number offers a case in point. Drenched in groove and reverb and a spliced vocal that drags you in the direction of the floor, it’s a party-starting anthem on considerable gumption. The sporadic, jazzy Rhodes chords only add to the tension, too, ensuring ‘Sensation‘ is a track that’s sure to be remembered long after the summer months have passed.

Next on the scene is ‘Lap Clap‘. This time around, the attention is switched to a ghetto-infused vocal; one that’s wrapped tightly around a coiled barrage of bongos and an occasional, muffling, white noise sound. The momentum comes to a head with the unfurling crescendo adding to general ambiance.

Closing matters are HIVE owners Animal Trainer, who turn ‘Sensation‘ into an altogether different beast; one where space-aged themes and cosmic synths play a more prominent role. An excellent all-round EP that speaks to those looking for something different to pepper their sets with.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
