An Interview with Psychemagik

Psychemagik_Press_Shot_Colour.jpg 2013 has just begun and Psychemagik have already been to Australia and have a forthcoming tour lined up to the US. The future is certainly bright for this London duo who are currently the hottest property in disco. Danny McLewin and Tom Coveney talk to us ahead of their stopover at Brixtons Jamm this Saturday for Read The Crowds 9th birthday, about Fleetwood Mac, hardware, edits, gigs and much more!   Datatransmission –  Has your musical progression to where you are today been inspired by your peers or is it the music itself that has led you to create in a certain way. Psychemagik – Both…there are some seriously inspiring and talented people out there right now…in every genre. I really think its an incredible time for music!  Also there are many times when ideas arise from nothing and others when music writes itself.   “Where Are We?” was created in a dream before it became a reality.   Datatransmission – You are known for many things but your two edits of Fleetwood Mac’s Everywhere and Dreams have really captured attention. Can you elaborate on how these came to life? Was it to pay homage to the band or simply conceived as a DJ tool for your sets? Psychemagik –  We both love the Mac, from the early days of Peter Green to the ethereal pop of Everywhere & Dreams. So it was a homage but also because we wanted to take these great tracks to our dancefloor with a bit more gusto.  They are such sweet tracks originally anyway, so we wanted to be subtle but uplifting in our productions.   Datatransmission – It is highlighted that you are the “go to guys” for many other artists in respect of digging out hidden undiscovered classics as you have an enourmous and rare record collection. Do you have a long list of records as a result, waiting for a Psychemagik edit or do you just occasionally hear a track and get the itch to get to work on it? Psychemagik – Ha! Yeah the list is pretty long and still growing…too many nugs, not enough time!!   Datatransmission – You have been called on to remix for some incredible artists over the past year or so, one of my favourite tracks for some time being your job on Azari III. Any personal stand out experiences? Psychemagik – Thanks…remixing is a lot of fun, a chance to experiment and try new ideas! We’ve remixed such a diversity of sounds which keeps it so interesting. We’ve just remixed quite a big name for 2013 and it was a joy to work on…the vocals were so tight  – amazing!   Datatransmission – Can you talk us through your studio set-up. What’s your favourite piece of equipment? Psychemagik – Hmmm…a toss up between our Voyager & Minitaur !!   …ooo and Maschine!   Datatransmission – Be it remix, edit or production, do you prefer working on any particular one of these formats? Psychemagik – Ableton & Logic Pro are the main platforms…   Datatransmission – As DJs, what is your general set up? Psychemagik – Simple CDJs at the mo. Moving further into the digital world shortly!!  😉   Datatransmission – You will be playing at Brixton Jamm on Saturday 19 January for Read The Crowd Birthday. How do you find playing in London compared to other cities? Psychemagik – London crowds are among the best in the world  – their ‘up for it’ attitude is in a league of its own in many ways…if only we had better weather and could party outside more often – then we’d be laughing!   Datatransmission – In 2012, what was your most memorable DJ experience? Psychemagik – Sunset Ashram Gig Ibiza   Datatransmission – The last 12 months has seen you flying about all over the place, Australia, all over Europe and now you are about to embark on a US tour taking in (at time of press) 15 dates in under a month. Must be an exciting prospect taking on the US and any particular cities you are really looking forward to? Psychemagik – Yeah…soo excited!! Chicago & Detroit for obvious reasons but the whole experience is going to be mind blowing – what a way to see such an incredible country!   Datatransmission – It looks like 2013 is going to be another massive year for you. Do you have any hot news for us, be it in the studio or behind the decks you can tell us about that not another soul knows about? Psychemagik – …’Edits All Stars Compilation’….say no more!   Follow the link for more information on their headline gig at Jamm this Saturday 19 January –

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
