DLR, Hydro, Mako & Villem – The Formula
Label: Dispatch RecordingsScore: 8.5/10
Since splitting from former production cohort Octane, it’s fair to say DLR has been fairly active on the beats. After recently remixing Spectrasoul’s amazing Sometimes We Lie (and doing it serious justice too) he joins forces with Hydro, Mako & Villem on latest single The Formula.
As expected it’s nothing but classy beats from these four producers. They say too many cooks can spoil the broth but that’s not the case here, rhythmic drum patterns provide the step as that almost trademark DLR style bass warps and growls all over the track at will. You can hear the basic principle these guys would have had for writing The Formula: groove. Which is lucky as there is tons of it running right through its entire six minutes. The melodious stabs add that splash of funk to it, providing that extra head nod factor. On the reverse you can find another multi producer special in Saturate, this time teaming up Villem, Linden, Mako and Fields. You’d be advised not to sleep on this one for there is rolling bass lines galore, cutting synths tempered with a soft subtle breakdown. A true cut of eyes down drum & bass.
The Formula and Saturate is certainly my favourite Dispatch releases of late, both tracks doing different things sound wise but similar in their high quality. These producers are all doing great things in their own rights so getting them on track together was only going to breed incredible results. Truly essential D&B.
