Cromie & Sage Caswell – Vines / Pyrex

If there is one word that comes to mind about this release, on newbie label Peach, it would be “big”. Every sound in this pair of tracks, produced by the LA based duo of Cromie and Sage Caswell, feels like it has been inflated to fill absolutely every nook within your inner ear. Take the low end rumble of Pyrex for example, the toms almost become a singular blanket entity thanks to their sheer dominance, with a wide phasing pad stopping the sonic spectrum from becoming entirely lopsided.

Vines just notches the momentum up even further being a resounding carnival infused number, its choral vocal filtering up into the sky while the keys emphatically oscillate around you. Think the dizzying loop of audio in Underworld’s Two Months Off, with a bit more of a House sensibility, and you are halfway there.

The already high quality carries through to the three remixes on show. Ghosts On Tape’s re-rub of Pyrex doesn’t quite have the beefy rumble of the original, but bounces the classically retro House groove around your eardrums in a subtler and equally effective fashion.

Detroit’s Kyle Hall is tasked with taming Vines in his own unique style. The phasing carousel of the original takes a backseat to some swinging analogue soul, the lead solo aimed squarely at hitting your happy buttons. Those who feel a need to shun those strange oversized shiny black CD’s will find a unique take on Vines by DJ Spoko. This digital only version is an intriguing sidestep, ever so slightly reminiscent of the idiosyncratic electro of Two Lone Swordsmen’s Rotting Hill Carnival, its metallic atmosphere like a distant and wiry cousin of the original.

With all this in mind, if Peach were looking for the ideal first step to take with their label, they couldn’t have wished for a better one – big by nature, big in content, big on quality.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
