Christian Nielsen – Play It Right

PID037_PS.jpgLabel: Play It DownScore: 8/10

Christian Nielsen made his debut only a few months back on Jesse Rose’s sublabel, Play It Down, and it’s testament to his continued standing in the production game that he’s been called on again for the label’s most recent outing, with this 3-track affair, the Get Right EP, another one that offers a captivating insight into a sound that’s laden with dexterous hues and various sound complexities alike.

Easing in matters is ”Get Right” itself, an insanely catchy track that features the sort of R&B drawl that Rose himself has manipulated regularly over the years. The backdrop of the track is no less enticing, with its tick-tock percussion and its many intricate facets immediately marking it out as an effort of distinction. And by the time that canny synth line reaches a crescendo, we’re left in no doubt about its obvious merits.

Middling effort ”Drip Drop” is enveloped in a slew of watertight snare hits and surefire groove, with the momentum gradually building and eventually exploding under a kaleidoscope of colour. Finally, ”Roll It” is another that unfurls gradually but expertly, with this one very much suited to peak-time floors; the very antithesis of the rasta-esque vocals that play a subtle and sporadic role in the track’s make up. Well played by Play It Down.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
