Juan Sanchez – Buffer

Juan Sanchez - Buffer EP [Drumcode] artwork

Label: Drumcode
Release Date: Out Now

A respected member of the global techno elite, FORMAT boss Juan Sanchez has certainly kicked off his 2015 in style, with the release of his ‘Buffer’ 12″ via Adam Beyer’s much venerated Drumcode imprint, quickly finding itself in our heads and on our playlists.

The action gets underway with title track ‘Buffer,’ a pounding slab of furiously driven techno that’s utter sense of relentlessness is only matched by its ominous tone. Aimed squarely at the peak hours, ‘Buffer’s retrofitted vibes wouldn’t be amiss in Detroit warehouse circa 1992 and drenched in nostalgia – with a distinct sense of danger lurking underneath – it walks a line that’s sure to win favour with fans of the Motor City’s seminal early output with more than a whiff of X-101 about it.

The second half of the EP gets going with the curiously titled ‘Fat Raccoon Holding A Bowling Ball’ which takes us on a trip through the dark tunnels of the techno underground, building to a destructive crescendo before returning us safely to minimal depths. Driving and tumultuous, it gets under your skin thanks to its forceful beats and an agenda that much like ‘Buffer’ is pushed firmly towards the climax of a night. Weighty stuff.

A pair of rugged techno workouts that’ll appease purists and more casual dancefloor dwellers alike, all things considered, the Buffer EP is a release of serious distinction and should be treated as such. We know we’ll be playing both cuts for a long, long time.
