Renegade Riddims: Dutchi

Dutchi is a Drum & Bass and Jungle DJ from Essex with a fond love of dark sounds and oldskool flavours. She began to mix at the tender age of 18 after receiving lessons from the record-breaking DJ Blackley. Dutchi played her very first show on Blackley’s Cre8DnB before moving on to playing in iconic venues all across the UK such as Ministry of Sound and Egg London as well as Fire and Lightbox to name a few. As well as this, she has showcased her love of dark Drum & Bass that packs a serious punch and oldskool Jungle all across Europe in countries such as Romania, the Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Malta and France.

Dutchi then joined forces with the highly affiliated left-of-the-mark label Nurtured Beatz Recordings from oldskool heads Kalm and Spindall, where she showcased her heavy Amen Jungle productions in a release entitled ‘Ways of the Underground‘ where she gives a firm nod to the sounds and breaks of the early 90s where it all began.

Dutchi continues to showcase her productions and hopes to bring more of her music to the forefront this year on another Jungle label that keeps it strictly underground as well as working heavily with her crew Dogs Watching You Eat which is a collective that she started in January 2020 with the philosophy of bringing back the underground within the rave scene and putting on parties that mix the old with the new while reinforcing 90’s rave culture.

Buckle up cos I’m gonna take you on a ride!

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

I’d have to say it’s definitely Payback Part 1 – Ryme Tyme. An oldie but a goodie and it absolutely hits you where it hurts! True grot.

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

In this mix, I have brought to you a wide array of styles, flavours and genres from the 90s to the present day. My love for Drum & Bass is SO diverse and the oldskool sounds that brought us to where we are today hold a VERY special place in my heart. I really wanted to capture that in this mix. I tend to like music that has dark undertones but packs a serious punch. I think that sums up all of the tunes in this mix!

Tell us about your next EP?

So myself and my good friend Meloki are working on a killer EP for a wicked jungle label. Keep your eyes peeled!

What have you got coming up?

I am looking forward to playing at Dispersion in Leicester on May 13th hosted by Shtum. This will be at Boxed Bar and Music Venue. I will be drawing for that late 90s Virus/Renegade Hardware sound for this night so fans of Ed Rush, Optical, Bad Company and the like – get yourselves down! (Tickets here)

When was the last time you actually raved?

A month ago I played a vinyl set at the Kapow! all-dayer. That was an awesome day. The event is hosted by Skyz and it is always one hell of an event. Covers something for everyone from Drum & Bass to oldskool Jungle with a sprinkle of oldskool Hardcore/Jungle Techno for good measure!
