DT588 – Illyus & Barrientos

Glasgow has always been a fertile breeding ground for music. With countless renowned DJs hailing from the city, there is no shortage of world-class talent. The latest duo to set dance floors alight in Glasgow and far beyond are Illyus & Barrientos.

The pair have diverse origins – Barrientos has Chilean parents and was born in America, while Illyus grew up in Frankfurt after being born in Govan. They met on Glasgow’s dance floors in 2014, building a friendship over their mutual love of the kind of unashamedly big, floor-filling modern house tunes that have since propelled them to dizzying levels of acclaim.

In many ways, they are an odd couple – while Illyus was growing up in the vibrant local hip-hop scene in Germany then Glasgow, distributing early mixtapes for an enthusiastic audience of friends, Barrientos was still taking classical piano lessons, playing Chopin and Beethoven. In the studio, these diverse influences come together to create some spectacular dance floor alchemy. Raw and funky, their tracks pulse with percussive energy and deep, infectious hooks.

They offer up their debut EP for Tube & Berger / Juliet Sikora‘s esteemed Kittball Records, entitled ‘The Wasp’ exclusively via Beatport on 30th March and play Egg London on Friday 20th April and they join our podcast today,  Listen to it below, on Spotify or iTunes here

Sum up this podcast in 10 words…
Nothing but the belters we’re dropping at the moment.

What’s your personal favourite track on it?
Ohhhh that’s a tough one! We really love the Blond:ish track ‘wa is da wa’ but Juliet Sikora’s ‘what did I tell you’ is another monster… the ladies are doing the business!

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
We always like taking people on a little journey which basically means our sets are very mood dependant. At the start we go all out clubby then some groovey records come in and 20 minutes later we might enjoy a little deep section. It’s all about touching peoples emotions.

What’s the best gig you’ve played recently?
Has to be our Black Market night at Egg London. We started the set so hyped which meant we had to keep following it up with mad stuff. Barrientos exact words after it were ‘I put everything into that’. Off he went to bed haha! The crowd were next level.

What have you got coming up?
Our current ‘The Wasp EP’ is out now on Beatport. We always wanted to be part of the Kittball family so pleased that the Tube & Berger guys loved the record. In the coming months we have quite a few old skool remixes coming out which we have been testing at shows. These, if we may say so, are next level! EP wise we’re dropping one on Mother Recordings & another one on Toolroom.

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
We actually individually always were and still are readers of Data Transmission so now, more than ever, know how important the support is and we appreciate it so much. Very humbled & hopefully we can continue coming up with the goods. Love ya x
