After introducing several new awards to recognise the rise of EDM and give the genre its first formal recognition from a major awards ceremony the Billboard Music Awards today revealed its first 3 new EDM category winners for Top EDM Artist, Song and Album.

This years nominees had already been announced with chart topping DJ’s and producers David Guetta, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Skrillex and Swedish House Mafia all receiving nominations for ‘Top EDM Artist’, with Frenchman Guetta coming out on top. The ‘Top EDM Song’ award was be then contested by two efforts from Harris ‘Feel So Close’ and ‘Sweet Nothing‘, and  David Guetta’s million download selling single Titanium’ but both lost out to cult online sensation the ‘Harlem Shake’ by Baauer. Serial grammy award collector Skrillex then picked up the award for ‘Top EDM Album’ before bizarrely Madonna scooped the final award for ‘Top Dance Album’. How and why Madge got the nod in this catergory we don’t know but what we do know is it’s wrong. So wrong…..

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
