Following a packed out touring schedule, Shigeto has unveiled a full stream of his his upcoming LP ‘No Better Time Than Now’, which is penned for release on August 19th through Ghostly International.
It’s another case of 2013 spoiling us for choice in regards to albums and after confirming a new album was set to drop this summer, the producer revealed tracks ‘Detroit Part 1,’ and ‘Ringleader’ before sharing ‘Olivia’ which serves to bridge Shigeto‘s previous musical journeys to the new world of the upcoming album as Shigeto himself explains. “2012 was a powerful year for me. I released my second LP; I played nearly 180 shows in 360 days; I made the move back home from Brooklyn, NY to Detroit, MI; a six-year relationship of mine came to an end and I made it 30 years on the planet.” Those aware of the music of Zach Saginaw, better known to you and me as Shigeto, have always know that his material has been deeply rooted in his personal history. His debut EPs Semi-Circle and What We Held Onto explored his grandmother’s experience from a US internment camp through ambient, beat driven tracks, nostalgic melodies and spliced vocal samples, including his grandmother’s vocals.
He then followed this with 2012’s sophomore album Lineage which embarked this listener on a visceral aural journey through his heritage, enthused with the sounds of of jazz, hip-hop, funk and folk. The cover of his great grandfather’s house in Hiroshima even adorning the Lineage artwork.
Now we’ve got to know all about Saginaw’s past and how he became the musician he is today it seems the new album has a much greater focus on the present and where the future is headed for the eclectic beatsmith. The title says it all ‘No Better Time Than Now’ as the album bills itself as drifting through the concepts of change and immediacy which supposedly reflects the 12 months of the life of its author whilst making the LP.
With sounds that frequently traverse the sonic spectrum, Shigeto is a producer impossible to categorize let alone pigeon hole and we here at DT have been loving the new album of which you can find our review here.
