Monty debuts with Jackie Knows Karate Records with his ‘Operator’ EP

Glasgow Born Monty has arrived and is now operating fully with his debut EP dropping on Jackie Knows Karate Records ‘a go-to for Scottish dance music’

Dougie West may not be a name you’re familiar with, however, his latest project under his Monty alias is causing significant rumblings in Glasgow’s underground scene. Featuring on the established and respected Bedroom Traxx series with a handful of piano-driven house bangers, Monty has finely tuned his style ahead of the release of his debut EP ‘Operator’.

Dropping August 27th on the very hot Jackie Knows Karate Records, which has been called ‘a go-to for Scottish dance music’ by BBC Scotland’s Pheobe Ingle Holmes of BBC Introducing, Monty brings his club a happy sound to the label for its 15th release after a string of reputable hits. Monty’s use of creating synths using Ableton stock plugin Operator is some kind of wizardry. These synths and pad-like sounds are prominent in the EP’s titular track which focuses on cool grooves driven home with an attacking bass. Push & Pull expands on these ideas while creating a whole new atmosphere with deeper sounds and a sample of Benny Benassi’s Satisfaction to keep the flow grooving. The EP closes out with a more commercial feel in Get U with a Piano driven house track and a catchy hook that will get stuck in your head.

This isn’t Monty’s first outing on the label though as he has featured on both the label’s Dojo Compilations with his tracks ‘Space Dub’ and ‘Funky Feelin’ being standouts of the VA.

Label Boss, Kyle Hawkins said “I have really loved Dougie’s stuff right from the beginning of the label. He gave us Space Dub for the first-ever release and we were always keen to put out a stand-alone piece from him. We continued to send tunes back and forth and eventually, we had the three for Operator. I’m really glad he has trusted us with his debut EP as he is another one of Scotland’s many untapped, undiscovered and unbelievably talented producers”

Jackie Knows Karate Records is the perfect home for this EP as the label continues to establish itself as the go-to for Scottish dance music and remains at the forefront of Scotland’s dancefloors, shining a light on Scotland’s underground artists.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
