Grimes Trolls Boiler Room

We like at good joke here at DT so we really enjoyed watching Grimes shamelessly troll boiler room fans as she delivered a hilarious DJ set at  Canadian techno don Richie Hawtin’s Ibiza villa for the popular streaming site’s ‘Ibiza Villa Takeovers’ series. Grimes then decided to do away with all formality and attempts at DJing as the popstar decided to play off of her ipod much to the consternation of many watching fans. Playing alongside fellow ENTER. guests Nina Kraviz and Azari & III, Grimes dropped a series of cheesy pop numbers including tracks from the Venga Boys, Taylor Swift and perhaps most noticeably considering we’re in the middle of August ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey.

All in all it was a set full of mirth where Grimes had her tongue placed firmly in her cheek throughout  but it appears to have gone down badly with the particularly sensitive taste of many techno aficionados who were tuned in online with many taking to social media to vent their anger. Grimes however seemed unperturbed by the scathing online criticism and responded by tweeting:

Pissing off all Djs by playing t swift on boiler room tune in!

And how did Minus boss Hawtin react to the unorthodox set from his guest? Well we’re of the opinion that he was in on her plans as he jokily interrupted his own set midway through to play Nicki Minaj’sBee’s In A Trap’ to further startle techno fans before reverting to his more signature sound. Great work Grimes. Great work.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
