Kumasi Music Day-Night Party (London – Sunday)

It’s May, and all of a sudden people are feeling a bit more chipper. Festivals big and small loom on the horizon. And, believe it or not, Kumasi are in the mood for throwing their biggest party yet! Kumasi Music Day-Night Party will be a 14hour, outdoor/indoor, day/night extravaganza, so this Bank Holiday Sunday (26th May) make sure you have your tickets for this outstanding party. The line-up is, quite frankly, spot on. Kolombo hops across the channel to take the helm of Kumasi Music’s May Bank Holiday SpecalKolombo’s 2012 was amongst the most prolific in the game, where he began to be recognised as a producer of considerable talent and style. He is joined by Lovebirds, a stalwart of house music and a real producer’s producer. HNQO, whose track ‘Point of View’ (Hot Creations) found itself knocking around with this writer’s best tracks of 2012, will make an esteemed Kumasi Music debut. The warm climes and disparate musical heritage of Brazil have coloured his music with the same melodic inspiration as some of his fellow countrymen. Matt Fear is back for more, armed to the teeth with fresh party dubs that always test the limits of the system he plays on. Kreature, with a remix on MTA Records in the pipeline, continues with what he knows best by chopping up the dark and the light into disco-infused house rollers. Jonny Cade has releases for 2020Vision and Moodymusic in the crosshairs, as his bouncing brand of tech-house continues to see recognition amongst dance music’s big boys. Finally, 20 year-old prodigy SION rounds off the bill, as his releases on MTA RecordsNasty Funk and Sleazy Deep continue to ply the dance music charts.

secretsundazemaybank.png Secretsundaze at Oval Space (London – Sunday) For their second event of the 2013 summer season – and to ensure the second bank holiday in May goes off in true party style, secretsundaze travel to Oval Space in East London’s Bethnal Green on Sunday May 26, with Nick HöppnerKiNK (live) and Joey Anderson making their secretsundaze debut, and James Priestley and Giles Smith doing what they do best. Headlining the party is Nick Höppner one of the most influential cogs in the Berghain wheel as resident DJ, label manager and generally a man of great taste and influence. He mixed the most recent edition of the Ostgut Ton ‘Panorama Bar 04’ compilation to great aplomb and can weave comfortably between many facets of house and techno. secretsundaze is very much looking forward to welcoming him to the May Bank Holiday Special. Second up is one of the most highly rated live acts in the world, KiNK, who’ll be bringing something special to secresundaze. The Bulgarian-born producer has been making waves for some time with his dynamic, high-energy often acid-infused sound with its roots in Chicago and Detroit, and has released numerous records on the seminal Rush Hour Recordings with regular collaborator Neville Watson. KiNK’s Boiler Room set in November 2012 really got tongues wagging, and he was voted 5th in Resident Advisor’s Top 20 Live Acts of 2012 poll in December. KiNK brings his energy and enthusiasm to secretsundaze – here’s a man who loves what he does. Finally secretsundaze is excited to present rising cutting-edge talent in the form of New Jersey native Joey Anderson for his debut London set. This year definitely looks set to be his best year yet, with a string of great releases behind him on his close affiliate and friend Levon Vincent’s label Deconstruct, a killer track on UntilMyHeartStops and other releases on his own Inimeg Recordings. Just like his compatriots Vincent, DJ Qu, Fred P and co, Joey can cover the most abstract techno right through to more traditional soulful New York vibes. Completing the lineup are two of the finest residents in town, in the form of James Priestley and Giles Smith, presiding over their 12th year, and ensuring this party opens and closes in style. So with this plethora of reasons make sure you get down to Oval Space on Sunday 26th May.

Ceaze. & Half Full Presents Alexis Raphael

The man behind London’s infamous sunday party Creche, we figured he would be a artist that would know how to set our sunday party off right. Signed to labels such as Hot Creations, Culprit, Leftroom, Alexis‘s began his own musical career on London’s (in)famous pirate radio network. It was also where he built a vinyl collection that ranges from Chicago house and Detroit techno to early drum ‘n’ bass, and UK house & garage. This vinyl collection can be seen in his sets by creating a ultra-modern sound with a “definite retro feel”, he mixes everything from classic Chicago house to contemporary deep house, fused and injected with splashes of techno, funk, 80s and disco. “There are no rules in the world, just a simple guideline: play the music you like and hopefully people will dig it.”

Kumasi Music Party (Manchester – Saturday)

The May Bank Holiday holds pride of place amongst the British rave community, gently coaxing the season of outdoor partying into view, and providing a timely break before an inevitably busy summer. Kumasi Music have embraced this spirit by having a Manchester bank holiday knee-up to accompany a day-night extravaganza the following day in London. Central to the success of these parties is a short hop across the channel from Belgian KOLOMBO, who has had 12 months to remember, releasing on 2DIY4, Kompakt and MTA Records. In addition to this takeover of house music’s major labels, an intense touring schedule over the past couple of years have cemented an esteemed reputation as a party-starting DJ, where cuts are designed firmly for the floor. HNQO joins Kumasi in Manchester for a double header as part of his UK tour. Riding high on the back of signing to Hot Creations, the young Brazilian is held in extremely high regard, intending to follow in the footsteps of Brazilian greats such as DJ Marky and Amon Tobin. MATT FEAR continues his Kumasi residency, at a time where his “Groove With It” EP (Resonance Records) finds him in superb production form. As a DJ, the Yorkshireman continues his straight-laced, no nonsense approach to getting people moving, positively attacking his fans with growling sub-bass and forceful drumwork. Similarly, KREATURE will step up to the decks once more, as a remix for MTA beckons him to continue his steady rise towards dance music’s elite. SION, creative force behind “Make You Do” (MTA), has set about rubber-stamping his new-found fame with slew of releases on Sleazy Deep, Suspect Behaviour and Nasty Funk. Finally, NastyFunk co-owner ERIK CHRISTIANSEN will grace the decks, fresh off a glittering remix of “Waiting Up” on Popart, and a tour of Brazil.

DUSKY.jpg

Flash Mob present Dusky

London based producers Nick Harriman and Alfie Granger-Howell are Dusky, a name that has become instantly synonymous with UK house and techno. Signed by the label that broke Maya Jane Coles (Dogmatik), the devastating deep grooves of “Flo Jam” were hammered by everyone from Jamie Jones, Sasha and Pete Tong to Disclosure, Joy Orbison and Boddika and even commercial acts like Calvin Harris; earning itself the unexpected title of iTunes Dance Single Of The Year. The eclectic, well honed outlook is the result of absorbing two decades of global dance music, digging back beyond and a shared production career that has spanned nearly 10 years and seem them produce everything from classic progressive to liquid drum & bass together under various guises. Naturally shifting through the full spectrum of house and techno – with strains of their formative garage and d&b influence, Dusky’s diverse take on the modern dancefloor was summed up best by their shortlisted contribution to BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix – which joined the dots between jungle legends PFM, the vintage techno of Reese Project and the classic garage of MJ Cole by way of modern innovators such as Huxley, Joy Orbison and Omar S. Alongside Dusky we bring you Ben Martin, the High Sheen boss is consistently praised as one of the best selectors this city has to offer. With a string of game changing releases under the labels belt and a recently secured residency at Fabric, the toast of the Glasgow scene is no longer our best kept secret. And as usual, resident Vandelay will be in from the get go spinning an eclectic mix of choice cuts and starting the party the right way.
