BBC Announces Music Streaming Service

The Beeb has revealed plans to launch its own music streaming service in its latest charter report, outlining its ambition to launch “a new music discovery service”.

“We have developed a digital music proposal with the music industry, which builds on BBC Music’s Playlister,” says director-general Tony Hall. “It would make the 50,000 tracks the BBC broadcasts every month available to listen online, for a limited period.

“Audiences would be able to access this music via playlists curated by the BBC, and they would be able to build their own playlists based on the music they hear and love on the BBC. Through this digital music offer, we would reinvent our role as a trusted guide, in partnership with our audience and with the UK music industry.”

Streamable content will be a mix of recorded tracks and live sessions taken from across the BBC’s various platforms with listeners also having the option of creating their own, individual channels.

Committed to “showcasing the best UK music to audiences across the world” the service aims to integrate with other digital outlets with users “able to transfer playlists between digital music products, and access them after BBC availability has expired through third-party providers.”

“Our music product would be the only one in the market which would be fully open and integrated with other digital providers,” explains Hall. “Users will be able to transfer playlists between digital music products, and access them after BBC availability has expired through third-party providers.”
