$67,000. Wow. That’s an impressive level of commitment but not exactly surprising. There are few artists who have such a dedicated following as cult producer Aphex Twin and so there was always going to be a great deal of demand from fans when a test pressing of the super rare Caustic Window LP emerged on Discogs. So far so good but a very evident problem soon presented itself : the $13,500 price tag.

Out of the reach of most, fans quickly turned to crowd-sourcing website Kickstarter to club together to buy the LP and distribute digital copies to backers.

The campaign ended on Saturday, May 10th, with 4,124 backers helping raise more than seven times the original target of $9,300 (after negotiating with the seller agree upon that price). The campaign received the full support of Aphex Twin’s imprint Rephlex and will see the test pressing ripped to digital format and distributed to buyers before the original vinyl makes it way onto eBay; with the proceeds being divided between Aphex Twin and his label, the Kickstarter contributors themselves and a charity. Good thinking guys!
