Jarring debut on SWR with ‘Break Off’ EP

Share

Showcasing another of the ultra-talented South West Riddim residents’ team, the label returns with Cornwall-based duo Jarring with their first EP release on the imprint, ‘Break Off’. With previous form for delivering searingly high-quality minimal Drum & Bass, they push the boundaries again with a four-track release that has seen support across the festival season including at NASS.

‘Back 2 Me’ opens the EP with a quintessential take on subtly energetic minimalism. An equilibrium exists between the growling lead bass stab, and the more delicate rolling bass notes, tightly controlled by snappy snares and industrious hi-hats.

The title track ‘Break Off’ brings a true Drum & Bass roller to the EP. Unsettling atmospheric elements keep the listener on their toes during the buildup, with a component-heavy drum rack delivering a surprisingly simple-yet-energetic roll to the tune.

Defined by wobbly low-end stabs, ‘Musical Construct’ brings a taste of the more eccentric and experimental. Loosely controlled kicks and snares exude white noise in all the right places, whilst precision use of shakers and percussion keeps the track flowing bar by bar.

Last but not least, ‘Pay Up’ positions itself right in the middle of several prominent sounds in drum n bass right now. Simple drums punch above their weight category, whilst the wonky bassline feels just as home in a gritty minimal track as it could in a modern jump-up roller tune. Keep your eye out for a dubstep switch-up on the second drop of this one.

With previous releases on the label including a collaboration with JTR and the highly appraised ‘Desires’, Jack and Sam have delivered their single most important and impressive body of work to date with this EP.

We cannot wait to see where this release takes them!
