Six years away, and Tough Art have returned with plenty of bass. The Brazilian duo land back on Lee Foss’ Repopulate Mars on 2nd October with their three-track ‘Walk Away’ EP, and we’ve got the first play of the title cut.
Fernando Tonello and Phelipe Lamanna have kept busy since their last appearance on the label in 2020. Club and festival dates across Brazil have come alongside a growing catalogue and regular Beatport chart appearances. Their FractaLL collaboration ‘Collors’ even landed in a Dior commercial. Here, though, the business is firmly back in the booth.
Our premiere, Tough Art’s ‘Walk Away’, keeps things lean. A spoken-word vocal winds around nimble synth notes, with deep bass doing the heavy lifting underneath. There’s space between the percussion and enough movement in the groove to keep the pressure on without throwing everything at the mix.
That restraint gives the vocal room to work. It brings a little mischief to a track built around the low end, suited to a close basement and a system with some weight behind it.
Elsewhere, Tough Art’s ‘Sandcode’ takes a more melodic turn, threading cascading synth lines through crisp percussion. São Paulo producer Rapham joins the duo for ‘Kiss Me’, closing the EP with a restless rhythm, grainy synths and a sultry vocal.
Three cuts with their own angles, but we’re starting with the title track.
