SHADED Gets Weird on South of Saturn with ‘Down Now I’m Up’

Share

SHADED brings his twisted Californian funk to Lee Foss’ South of Saturn today, 16th October, with his latest club weapon, ‘Down Now I’m Up’.

There aren’t many producers who make wonky tech house quite like SHADED. His productions have always sat somewhere between driving club grooves, psychedelic synth work and a healthy disregard for playing things straight.

With releases on Dirtybird, Hot Creations, Trick and Desert Hearts, the Californian has built a catalogue that refuses to settle into one corner of house and techno. His ‘Holla Atcha Boy’ also featured on Dirtybird’s ‘Heavy Heaters’ compilation, which we covered back in 2022. He’s been keeping good company for a while.

Recent collaborations with Harvard Bass, Ardalan and Kevin Knapp have kept things moving, and now he makes his South of Saturn debut with something suitably strange.

SHADED’s ‘Down Now I’m Up’ is all twisted synths, laser-like pads and dark, distorted vocals. The groove has a proper swagger to it, with enough bounce to keep the floor moving while the production takes a few unexpected turns.

It’s the sort of record that makes perfect sense in a dark basement at 3am, when things are getting a little loose and nobody’s particularly interested in going home.

We’re premiering SHADED’s ‘Down Now I’m Up’ today on Data Transmission.

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
