Saytek – Moondancer EP
Label: Disco ElectronicaRelease: 15.04.2013
Hot on the heels of the excellent Trav & Volta release, Disco Electronica proffer another quality release showing their Sankey’s pedigree by genre hopping whilst keeping the quality at a premium.
The Moondancer EP is rooted in deep, rolling techno territory but with remixes from the excellent Winter Son and Monoman taking a house and tech-house offshoot respectively, there’s plenty to take on board if techno isn’t your bag.
With heavyweight players, such as John Digweed and Richie Hawtin on board the original is definitely pushing the right buttons with its deep underlying rhythms, stuttering vocal samples and gently building ambient layers subtly pushing the dancefloor into a hypnotic groove of trumpets and spiraling, bubbling effects: think Miles Davis a mile underwater gently sending sounds to the surface.
Forthcoming contributor to Sasha’s label Last Night on Earth, Winter Son turns in a stunning soundscape of sultry layers, evocative and soulful in parts and stripped to a driving bassline in others, this is a mix that is curious yet contemporary, moody yet uplifting. A real grower and whilst not immediately apparent this track is certainly the hidden gem in this package. A future artist to watch, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more from Winter Son in the coming months .
Finally Monoman complements the other remixes with a rolling tech-house groove that is sure to ignite any flagging dance-floor with its straight-to-the-point arrangement and bouncy bassline, and great use of the brass section it’s easy to see why it got such support from house legend Todd Terry in Miami at this years WMC.
A few more quality tracks from the open minded DER label, if they can maintain this level of quality in their releases it may well be well worth keeping on top of their forthcoming roster this year.
