Mia Dora – You In The Future EP
Label: Madtech RecordsRelease: 25/11/12
Having been bubbling under for some time with a string of uber-quality remixes including one of 2012’s stand outs; Roots Manuva’s, ‘Get To Get’ for Big Dada, and a pair of releases on Glasgow’s High Sheen imprint you still might be excused for having let Mia Dora slip under your radar.
Their recent Clear release on Moda Black catapulted them into the limelight scoring an essential new tune and featuring set of first rate remixes from industry stalwart DJ T & label bosses Jaymo & Andy George themselves.
But it is this release on Kerri Chandler’s Madtech that has really caught my attention, with its honest, straight-up quality, two tracks and no remix format.
You In The Future offers two fingers straight up at deep house. The quirkiness of the off-kilter riffs and simple melodies stand out like nothing else, the acid riffs flirt with peak-time but the deep house keys and high strings are completely authentic. If you can wrap your head round the ambiguity as to whether Mia Dora are purists or simply poking-fun you’ll realise that You In The Future is reluctantly anthemic, a crafted slice of house music that knows exactly where it’s coming from but taunts you nevertheless.
Despite the effortless swagger of You In The Future it was nothing short of a sheer delight to find that After The Dog is a genuine groove-based barn stormer, full of warmth yet simple and effective, tribal and deep, bass-driven and full of soul. Simplicity itself is the ace up the sleeve of After The Dog, but why it rocks like it does must be an ingredient in Mia Dora’s secret sauce, the je ne sais quoi of experience perhaps.
It’s a great feeling to be this excited about a new act, hailing from the UK and clearly with a bright future, if any production team had a time, Mia Dora’s is now.
