Kris Davis – Closer

SBJKT004-200x200.jpgLabel: SubjektRelease: 21/08/2014

If we’re honest, this is the first time we’ve happened to come across the work of Pompey native Kris Davis, which comes as no real surprise considering this is pretty much the sum of his parts so far. The EP we’re alluding to here is the Closer EP; a really beguiling introduction to a talent that seems auspicious if nothing else. The release comes to the fore on Dutch label Subjekt, itself a regular proponent for producers on the cusp. And with two original tracks on show here, Davis wastes no time in taking a stranglehold on our attention.

Seeing us in is the refined strands of ‘Closer’. Full of effervescent piano chords and a mystical approach that lingers throughout, it’s the sort of emotive track that wouldn’t sound out of place on DJ Koze’s much-revered Pampa label. And on that note, it’s gloriously off-kilter too and while the pace is steady rather than breathless, there’s more than enough here to keep the listener satisfied.

‘’Anti’’ is another fiercely melancholy number. This time, the producer uses a meandering melody as the backbone of the track, and it works wonders against its sparse, pitched back approach. This EP is a delightful assortment of sounds that shouldn’t be slept on. Tip!
