Introducing… Ellie Cocks

For those that have been hanging around Studio338 on a Sunday for the last year or so the name Ellie Cocks is not new to you at all.  As one of the key residents at the hugely popular ABODE Sunday parties, she has blossomed into one of todays upcoming talents behind the decks, commanding the dance floor with a bouncy and beaming grin, that is a delight to see. We’ve been following for her a while; eagle eye Data Transmission readers will remember she featured on our spotlight mix series back in October.

Before ABODE she was working the after hours’ scene, she picked up a job working the door for an after hour’s party in Vauxhall, London. She began to do the task all young DJs should do wanting to break in to industry, build up a network.  “I knew a DJ who played there and at the end of my shift, I would go and stand next to the DJ booth and pester him for a go! He let me jump on one day and from that I got a residency every week and I suppose the rest is history!”  Shortly after she had a fortuitous watching from ABODE head-honchos Pete & Kai who heard her play at a Magna Carta NYE event when she was playing in room four. Kai describes the story “I was at the event and the main room wasn’t that busy, so went to check out the rest of the club.  Room 4, the protocol room, was absolutely packed with this young girl jumping around with loads of energy behind the decks, playing some of most amazing records I’ve ever heard.  The next day I put a message out on my Facebook page to see if anyone knew her and everyone tagged Ellie.  I spoke with her through the social network and invited her down to play at the next ABODE and the crowd loved her, shortly after she became my resident.”

For Ellie, becoming an ABODE resident was a massive step forward in her career.  With them believing in their residents and building a club night based around them has really given them all a massive platform to develop as DJs, allowing them to play big slots in 2015, playing to big crowds and then stepping it up in 2016 to become the headliners.  “Another amazing highlight in my career has to be when I headlined at Studio 338 on the terrace and during the last track of my set, the whole crowd started chanting my name over and over again, it was surreal, I cried!”

The filming of this set which you can see below has led to bigger bookings including a calling from Amnesia this summer, as she has also been asked to play for Hannah Wants at Amnesia for the incredibly popular Together night on a Tuesday on the Terrace there.

With ABODE also stretching their legs further afield and extending their brand this summer to Ibiza, she and the fellow residents will be taking on Friday nights at Sankeys, which for Ellie was where Ibiza history starts so it’s a fitting place for her Ibiza DJing career to begin. “The first club I went to was Sankeys so I’m really happy that it’s the first club I’ll play at.”

Further back than that, it all began for The London-based Ellie, originally from West Sussex, was born in to a musical family and was raised with a healthy dose of House music mixed in her baby bottle “My mum and Dad definitely influenced me musically! They had an acid house wedding! Ha Ha 🙂 and I think ‘Voodoo Ray’ was my mum’s wedding track!” right through her early years growing up in a house where she had access to all the various types of house music, she was always destined to venture that way “Me and my older brother grew up on House music, Acid House, Chicago House, Soulful House and all types of genres from Jazz to Hip hop to Motown and so on!”  Family is a huge thing for Ellie, with them all supporting her at gigs and her brother Billy a massive support.

So yeah, shouts to my mum and dad, I always say if it wasn’t for them, who knows…

It’s this knowledge of a variety of music that lead us at Data Transmission to get the sense that this down to earth, delight of young woman could be one of the rare breed of DJs that didn’t actually need to produce, that pure track selection, craft, amount of gigs, simply finding unique records would be her route along the same lines as the likes of Jackmaster & James Zabiela.  This is not to be as Ellie has just completed her first track with the help of Max Chapman “Making music with Max has been a massive highlight in my career as I’m always playing his tunes. To now be working with him in the studio is amazing and I’m incredibly grateful for it!”  This has inspired her to begin working on more music at home and building a set of tracks that are hers “I’m pretty sure you can expect more music from me soon! I’ve got some studio time booked this summer so I’m looking to follow up with my own solo EP this winter”

Ellie Cocks headlines Egg LDN’s Ibiza Send Off on Friday May 20th alongside Jey Kermis, Jess Bays, Martin Ikin and more info on www.egglondon.co.uk ABODE take to Sankeys Ibiza every Friday from 24th June and Ellie plays Together at Amnesia on Tuesday July 12th.
