Dani Casarano and Felipe Valenzuela’s excellent vinyl only imprint, Melisma has always held a reputation for upstanding avant-garde electronic music that still works on the dancefloor. It is this sentiment that they achieved once again with aplomb on their latest release, the “Different Bass” EP from label co-founder Felipe Valenzuela and his fellow Chilean producer Jkco Mosqueira.
For the title track, the pair settle into a deliciously idiosyncratic club workout that pulsates and evolves with every bar. The simple yet highly addictive bassline flexes the tracks biggest muscle, but its own relentlessness is matched by the intrigue garnered by the other-worldly FX that swoosh over the top. It creates a unique soundscape that sucks the listener into a spacey, left of centre realm whilst retaining all the drive and energy to push the tension on the floor.
On the flip, Ricardo Villalobos strips things back with his remix, creating a beautifully textured and sonically immersive reinterpretation of the original. The intense atmosphere weaves an intricate blend of soft-edged elements together to form a track that flows with both a natural ease and fluid groove. It is a track awash with the artistic flair that always permeates Villalobos’ work.
A wonderful celebration of Chilean production talent, ML003 highlights the diversity of a label that has become a real beacon for interesting electronic music around the world. ML004 cannot come soon enough!
