Eric Volta – Love Your Illusion/Masters Of Puppets

Berlin-based Eric Volta is currently making a splash on various labels, but this is the big one which has been carving up early hours dance floors since Art Department started slipping it into their DJ sets at the start of the year. 

A master of the less-is-more ethos, Eric sets up stark pulsing grooves, dripping with subterranean, dripping pipe funk, then sets about embellishing them with the simple ingredients which then build and ride with the relevant mood.

In the case of ‘Love your Illusion’, it’s a metronomic metallic clank embellished with undurling Giorgio Moroder-style synth motifs, punctuated by this big squirty riff and subtler tones. ‘Masters Of Puppets’ plants conscious expounding and bleak spoken asides over stark, eerie groove-scape driven by radioactive worm of a bassline, draped with eerie lost female.

Another seismic missive from No. 19 [and can’t wait to hear what Mr Volta does next].
