A City Guide to Ibiza by Dee Montero

Dee Montero has been whipping dancefloors into a frenzy across the globe for more than 15 years. His productions on labels such as Saved and Diynamic have attracted admiration from the likes of Pete Tong and Solomun.

There’s few that would argue Dee Montero’s star is firmly in the ascendancy. Infact, some might go as far as to suggest he’s heading straight for the stratosphere but no one can deny he’s already left an indelible mark on the electronic music scene.

In the last couple of years, the Northern Irishman has clocked up releases on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep In Sound, Nic Fanciulli’s Saved imprint, Dave Seaman’s Selador Recordings and most recently Solomun’s Diynamic label with the chart busting ’Halcyon’ – the latter topping the Beatport Deep House Chart. An impressive haul for a CV that’s starting to become a thing of envy.

– Best place to buy records…

Can Vinilo in Ibiza Town. As far as I know it’s the only record shop on the island. It has a solid selection of new house and techno but you’ve got to grab them quickly as only few copies of each release.  They specialise in second-hand and new vinyl records, CDs.

– Best big club…

It’s hard to choose one in Ibiza as the island has some of the best in the world. I’ve always loved Amnesia and Space was amazing but Hi have really taken the club to a new level with it’s state of the art production and sound system.

– Best underground party….

For me it’s Maceo Plex’s Mosaic party at Pacha. As Pacha looks ahead to their Golden Anniversary of 50 years,  he’s curated a solid line-up this year including Nick Murphy aka Chet Faker; Royksopp; Jon Hopkins; Modeselektor; Levon Vincent, RØDHÅD, Ben Klock, Silent Servant, Lord of the Isles, Talaboman, Henrik Schwarz, Stephan Bodzin and more.

– Best Secret Island experience / excursion…

Not much of a secret experience but I just get in my car and explore the beautiful balearic island stopping off for a caña or 2 at my favourite points including Cala Comte, Agua Blanca and Benirras to see a different kind of sunset.

– Best pre-club bar…

Café Mambo is a bar located in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, the original pre-party bar. Perfect way to kick off the night by watching the sun go down with a few cold ones and listening to some of the world’s biggest DJs. It is most famous for being the official pre party point for the biggest nights on the island.

– Best Beach…

I’m not much of a sunbather but I love jumping off the rocks and swimming at Cala Salada. The perfect hangover cure.

– Best restaurant…

Their specialities include paella in Ibiza, fresh grilled fish or grilled seafood at El Carmen in Cala D’Hort with it’s magnificent view of Es Vedra and crystal clear waters. I could enjoy the sunset from their terrace and stay there all night with a few bottles of wine.

– Best boutique hotel…

The Hacienda at the very north of the island. It’s built on a cliff edge with spectacular sunset views and has a very unique spa. I stayed there for a few days in 2009, an amazing getaway from the craziness.

If you need a soundtrack to this city guide to Ibiza, Dee Montero – ‘Halcyon’ is out now on Diynamic.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
