Bob Barker – Broken Labour EP

Label: CatchScore: 7/10

Catch Recordings makes it to three releases with a strong and strange and therefore Broken Labour EP from Bob Barker. Barker has a history in art and design and that comes over in his evocative sound scape imagery on this four track new EP. Remixes from Rondel and Ryan Davis complete the package.

Barker’s Rondel is a spiralling abstract bit of techno with mysterious synths, groaning basslines and buried deep drums that set you in a dark sound world and leave you there. Traum and Bedrock associate and Berlin based Ryan Davis then remixes it into a much tripper track with tons of melodic layers, harmonic sounds and air hi hats.  Barker’s other original is then Firbeck, another minimalistic and hugely atmospheric cut that pairs slight kick drums with haunted synth lines and cavernous chambers of glowing pads. Lastly, Greenville Massive serve up the track of the EP with their remix, which is a lazy, warm and humid deep house roller with nice chords, a supple bassline and vibes a plenty.

Grahame Farmer

Grahame Farmer’s love affair with electronic music goes back to the mid-90s when he first began to venture into the UK’s beloved rave culture, finding himself interlaced with some of the country’s most seminal club spaces. A trip to dance music’s anointed holy ground of Ibiza in 1997 then cemented his sense of purpose and laid the foundations for what was to come over the next few decades of his marriage to the music industry.
