Renegade Riddims: I S C A R L A

After beginning her journey as a DJ back in 2020, I S C A R L A‘ s drive and passion for Drum & Bass have expanded and grown exponentially ever since. Following a journey of discovery through this genre, she has truly found the unique and seamless sound she is now known for.

With a focus on curating and producing unique sets which centre around the progression of Drum & Bass, these ‘story-like mixes’ take the listener on a journey through a spectrum of sub-genres, whilst introducing unexpected references to iconic tracks.

With a speciality in underpinning her mixes with darker halftime beats, the experience she aims to create is that of exciting unpredictable narratives, hopefully introducing listeners to slightly darker, more underground sounds and artists, whilst showcasing the possibilities of how this music can blend together and the excitement of what it can create.

I’m excited to bring I S C A R L A to our Renegade Riddims series with a mix that she has spent a lot of time and effort creating. She actually thinks it’s the very best set she has done to date! The mix features music from the likes of Skeptical, Amoss, Klinical, Wingz, Hyroglifics, Kyrist and loads more!

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

A dark, mysterious and unexpected journey through drum & bass.

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

I’m hoping I can split this into 3 answers!

So although I don’t produce (yet) I do play around with mashups by taking well-known tracks and turning them dark and halftimey and I am super proud of the latest one I’ve created specifically for this set. In fact, it’s actually even a little different for me as it’s delving into the 140 realm which should be a nice little surprise in this mix so keep your ears peeled for that!

I have to mention a specific dub I secured in this mix by Archetypal, I have been pestering them for ages for something so I was stoked to get my hands on this!

And finally, an all-time favourite of mine has to be Clairon by Submarine. When it comes to less is more, my god does he have this nailed in this song. I absolutely love it and you’ll probably find it in a number of my sets as it’s a proper stand-out track!

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

Halftime, halftime and a bit more halftime, with the odd sneaky mash-up thrown in to keep you on your toes. It’s all about expecting the unexpected. I spend a lot of time curating these mixes as for me it’s about telling a story and controlling a narrative so you feel as though you have been on a real journey by the conclusion of the set.

What have you got coming up?

June is an exciting month for me! I have an event coming up in Bristol on the 15th which I’ll be playing at which I’m super excited about, but can’t really say much more at the moment. And then I have another guest mix coming out towards the end of the month for House of Hifi!

When was the last time you actually raved?

This Friday just gone at the Flexout Audio Project 6 Afterparty at Steelyard and it was INCREDIBLE!!! Up there with the best dnb event I have been to, the sense of love and community at that night was out of this world, the lineup was epic and the music was insane!!

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

I just really hope you enjoy this mix! I spent a lot of time on it and loved pulling it together, I think it is such a true representation of me as a DJ! Also, I am always looking for more opportunities for guest mixes or gigs (as most DJs are I presume) so do hit me up if there’s anything out there!
