Renegade Riddims: Blooom

Share

Hailing from Leipzig in Germany, Blooom has recently dropped his debut release under the ProgRAM imprint through the brand new single ‘Get Low / Mia’, with a distinct sound highlighting his production capabilities. Catching ears throughout Europe through his amalgamation of musical genres, it’s now within the RAM Records camp and its sister-label ProgRAM where he comes with fresh music. A surefire way to draw attention to an experimental, yet melodic signature and one present throughout both tracks.

Grumbling basses and steppy percussive levels characterize a-side ‘Get Low’, whilst ‘Mia’ follows suit amongst distorted, warbling horns and twisted Spanish vocals. So once again, it’s time to get with the ProgRAM – channelling the underground through every new artist it pedestals.

We welcome Blooom to our Renegade Riddims series with a mix containing music from the likes of himself (including the above 2 tracks), The Upbeats, Bou, Yaano, DJ Fresh, The Prodigy, Noisia, Camo & Krooked, The Caracel Project, Millbrook, Koven and loads more!

Q&A:

Sum up this mix in 10 words…

The beautiful, ugly, fun and utterly insane sides of dnb

What’s your personal favourite track on it?

It has to be my Wolfgang Gartner – Space Junk Bootleg. I’ve made this one before I played my very first dnb set as Blooom. It’s like a breather for the crowd in the middle of a busy set just to explode in energy when the drop hits.

What’s the special ingredient in this mix?

I think the fact that I don’t know a lot about dnb and the culture makes my sets sound different (don’t get me wrong, I’m still learning). Being a hip hop aficionado, I’m using my outsider status to bring a unique and fresh perspective to the genre. Think of me as the rogue element that’s shaking things up and bringing a bit of colour to the genre.

Tell us about your next release?

I wrote ‘Get Low’ and ‘Mia’ in late 2021/ early 2022. I just started playing shows and was keen on producing some bangers for my sets. I’ve always been into nerdy, sound design focussed music but never really felt like I was able to nail what my mind dreamed up. At that time, I gained the confidence (and resilience) to just go full tryhard and spend hours on honing my craft. When Maria-Lea sent over the topline for Mia, I felt like everything finally came together.

What have you got coming up?

I’m VERY excited for 2023. Playing my first multi genre set @NOX in Feb and some festivals and gigs I could’ve never dreamed of a couple of years ago. I’m also in the midst of the longest chain of releases I’ve had in my whole life. So prepare for LOTS of new music. Oh yeah, and there’ll be a release of my ‘Sweet Dreams’ remix that’s being supported by all the big names in the scene (Andy C, Camo & Krooked, Kanine etc.).

When was the last time you actually raved?

Outside from playing sets? Probably summer ’22 at Liquicity Festival. I may not be the biggest raver, but I always look forward to Liquicity Festival. It’s just amazing to put faces to names that you’ve been texting across the years.

And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?

If I learnt anything across the last 10 years of music production then it is to keep honing your craft. People argue that you need to be lucky to “make it”, however, I’m living by the mantra that while luck is great, resilience is what’s gonna get you places.
