Hyperlynx ‘Love Yourself First’ [170+ Recordings] ***Out 15th December 2021***
Hyperlynx aka Nathan Wood has been making electronic music under various monikers for about 10 years. He shows this skill and diversity in his new 6 track EP ‘Love Yourself First’, setting the bar high for the quality that 170+ Recordings strives for.
Starting things off we have ‘Casual’, a warm and funky, horn-filled vibe, with 808s, wobbling basslines and plenty of amens, what more could you ask for?!
The titled track ‘Love Yourself First’ brings us to a completely new soundscape that is experimental yet familiar. The strong synth work surrounded by arps lead us to the drop that absolutely blows our minds. The vision was clear here, and following such an impactful piece of music it only made sense to bring things back home with ‘Won’t Let Go’ – this soulful lullaby carefully resets our palettes with the lush vocals of bbmac.
Next up, we flip the script with ‘Lightweight’, which drops us on our heads, a nod to the past with rave whistles, the old warehouse atmosphere and an MC. All intricately crafted into a moody dance floor weapon.
‘How Do You Like Me Now’ hits us with contagious vocals, a raspy bassline and big synths, neatly tucked into stepping drum work.
Lastly, we have ‘High Alert’, leaving us with a total anthem! The plucky bass guitar and wide stereo imaging finish off this EP with true class!
170+ Recordings is run by Aaron Payne & Jroy. Aaron has spearheaded the project and has taken advantage of the pandemic to hone in on production, and has been networking with plenty of artists both locally and abroad. He has releases on 4NCY:DarkMode, ProgRAM, Influenza Media (Fokuz) and Deviant Audio. With some exciting forthcoming projects in 2022. Jroy is a longtime Vancouvrite well known in the bass music scene and has shared the stage with many big names. Together they are bringing a needed focus to Drum & Bass on the West Coast of Canada.
