Doc ‘n Roll Presents ‘THE REST IS HISTORY: THE EARLY DAYS OF JUNGLE & DRUM ‘N’ BASS’

Doc ‘n Roll is thrilled to bring THE REST IS HISTORY: THE EARLY DAYS OF JUNGLE & DRUM ‘N’ BASS – a new film by Peter Costigan – to UK and Irish audiences. The film will be screened in select cinemas across the UK and Ireland and available to buy via download from 19 August 2022, through Doc’n Roll’s on-demand platform Doc’n Roll TV, and many other digital platforms.

From 12 August in advance of the wider release, Doc ’n Roll will host six special preview screening events across the country including in-person Q&As with the director and featured artists from the film.

Peter Costigan, a musician, recording and DJing as Stickbubbly, Costigan marshals an exceptional array of archive footage to take this underground story overground on film for the first time. With deep roots in UK Soundsystem culture and emerging from the marginalised underground rave and jungle scenes in the early 1990s, Drum & Bass has since become a global culture, generating several subgenres and derivatives along the way, including dubstep, riddim and halftime. THE REST IS HISTORY: THE EARLY DAYS OF JUNGLE & DRUM ‘N’ BASS deftly outlines the scene’s origin from East London council estates, through to raves and street parties across the UK, Europe and Canada and features unique insights from an astonishing mix of bass music’s most important original pioneers and instigators, including Jumpin’ Jack Frost, Ray Keith, Dillinja, Ragga Twins, Micky Finn, Paul Ibiza, and MC G.Q. And then there’s the music itself, every bit as exhilarating as when it was first heard in the 1990s.

As much a history of early rave and bass culture as a homage to Drum & Bass, the film tracks its formation initially as a black sub-genre on East London’s marginalised streets where it was critically supported by a network of local pirate radio stations, to its multicultural triumphant explosion across the globe’s clubs and dance floors within very few years.
