5 Egyptian DJs Not to Miss at Sandbox Festival

Share

The Egyptian Riviera is a beautiful place to soak up some local culture, sand and sea. And there can be no better time to do it than during Sandbox Festival Form June 13th to 15th.

Water sports and all sorts of activities are added to the music and local culture, food and drink, and this year’s headliners include &ME, Axel Boman, Baba Stiltz, Bradley Zero, Damian Lazarus, David August and other slick selectors.

Here we look at some of the finest local names who are also well worth checking out when you make the trip.

Adham Zahran

A master producer who summons spine-tingling deep house grooves, Adham Zahran has some fine releases on labels like Space Breaks, Neovinyl Recordings and Mood Music. As a DJ he paints vivid pictures with balmy pads and supple, absorbing grooves that make you lose your mind and get lost in the lush music.

Zeina

One of the most prominent women in the region is Zeina. She’s based in Cairo and is hugely expressive in what she does. She has gone on to play in top Berlin clubs like Club der Visionäre where she takes intimate crowds deep into the night. Exploring the fine line between house and techno she also runs her own Unfamiliar night that makes links between her homes in Berlin and Egypt and is where fellow women can flourish.

Safi

Anyone who has partied in Cairo will likely be aware of the work of Safi. A cult selector and radio personality who is the beating heart of the city’s underground, he spins real fire, is a vocal talent and occasional producer next to also being a fine percussionist. He breaks all genre rules so is definitely one to watch.

Ashmawy

Ashmawy brings a fine mix of melody, emotion and groove to all he does. He has learned all the necessary skills off his own back and is someone with a sophisticated sound that has found him make his mark both in Egypt but also further afield in just three short years since his debut. He has played with the best in the game from Sasha to Ame and always likes to tell a real story with the selections he makes.

Kitchen Crowd

Real name Hassan H, Kitchen Crowd makes and plays beats as well as putting on his own well-regarded parties. He has been doing so for many years so has earned local hero status on Jordanian scene and wider Middle Eastern musical landscape. His own sets are journeying affairs which take you on a real trip while his efforts as a promoter also bring the best names in the world to the region on a regular basis.
