Constrict returns to Context Audio with ‘Paradise’ EP
Context Audio are back after a short break spent gathering thoughts and developing a new look. They return with the third ever artist EP from Brighton, Constrict. Back on Context for the second time, along with frequent collaborators Koherent, his ‘Paradise’ EP his a wonderful celebration of everything great about liquid drum and bass.
Brighton based Constrict has been honing his sound quietly for the last few years, slowly finding ways to mix elements from his favourite influences in electronic music to create something unique. A string of releases on respected labels such as Med School Music, Context Audio and Lifestyle Music launched his music into the awareness of drum & bass fans in 2018, the year which also saw him feature on Koherent’s debut EP on Dispatch Recordings. The future looks bright for this rising star; with a steady flow of material forthcoming on some of the scene’s most exciting forward-thinking labels, drawing influence from deeper jungle, ambient, minimal and liquid drum & bass.
Constrict also has a residency on scene veteran High Rankin’s radio station, Threshold FM. His show (entitled Incidental Sonics) explores the most exciting parts of the current bass music spectrum. The main focus is on jungle and drum & bass, but overlapping sounds such as 140, techno and ambient music also play a big part in forming the sound palette for the show.
Back to the ‘Paradise’ EP which opens with our premiere ‘Salutation Dub’, shining burnished gold with gorgeous soulful vocals, impeccable percussion and a low slung bassline, proving that not all rollers have or need foghorns. Truly a weapon of epic proportions, that will hit you in all the right places.
Next up is ‘HPPD’ is everything that ‘Salutation Dub’ isn’t. Dark, brooding and vicious, it’s a solid stab to the senses and a certified DJ tool, deadly in the right hands.
The EP’s title track, ‘Paradise’, prooves that variety really is the spice of life. Cut from the same cloth as ‘Salutation Dub’, but with more of a focus on quirky breakbeats and with a suitably massive snare, it’s ideal for diehard junglists and gurning students alike.
Last, but by no means least, Shogun Audio‘s new signing Koherent have given ‘Paradise’ their twist. Reframed as a heady, intoxicating stepper, their remix has a cold soul and yet pure fire vibes that’ll make it stand out in any DJ set.
Constrict’s ‘Paradise’ EP is in our opinion a really well-executed piece of work and as with all things Context, this EP’s been a long time in the making, but definitely worth the wait now it’s here. We expect to hear a lot more from both Constrict and Context Audio in the coming months!
