Reviewed: Studio 338 Garden Launch Pt. 2 & Abode Takeover
London’s beloved venue Studio 338 has re-opened its doors and what a weekend they had in store for us recently; The Garden Launch Part 2 and Abode Takeover. The heatwave is live right now and the weekend vibes on point so it’s time to dust off the shorts and get your groove on. No matter where you are in London you are going to be sweating, so you might as well do it in what will surely be one of London’s top spots again in no time.
The Garden Launch Part 2 was a party for the heads. Veering towards the deeper, minimal end of the electronic spectrum with vinyl-only sets all day, it was akin to a soothing meditation. Proper journey music provided by serious selectors. Less dropping and more falling. The day was all about chilling with your crew, closing your eyes, feeling the heat and letting it drift away into the sunset. Getting lost with it. The bill included Denney, Eli Verveine and Cabanne but Christian Alexander Brown (Christian AB) stole the show. He brought the crowd up and loosened them down to the ground. Man couldn’t stop smiling, even letting out a chuckle when the vinyl scratched from all the dancing going on inside the rickety DJ booth. Speaking with him afterwards he said that playing the Morgan Geist record OCGC got the best reaction from the crowd and was his personal highlight. Sums up the day perfectly really.
Abode launched at Studio 338 on 7th September 2014 and boy what a hurricane it has been for them. They exploded on to the scene which saw them regularly selling out their monthly parties well in advance. 3 years later their events now regularly sell out in hours, they have a residency this Summer playing every Sunday at Sankeys in Ibiza and are launching their own festival in Finsbury Park on 24th September 2017. Big tings from a small crew who’ve kept it real from the get go. The Abode takeover back in their spiritual home was something special for sure with Jarmo (The Little Festival), Ross Roberts (London Rave Network), Jimmy Switch, That Song Bird, GW Harrison, Artikal and Jack Swift b2b Devstar (Regression Sessions) on the bill. In contrast to the day before the energy was insanely high from start to finish. Hit after hit after hit. Even when the last song was played I just wanted to be hit some more. Sadists the lot of ya haha. Personal highlight was watching Jack Swift mixing Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman into Soul II Soul – Back To Life (Acapella). Perfection.
Here are the songs that stuck to my substantia nigra during the 10.5 hour marathon; a perfect balance of up-front tech house, feel good disco and funk classics.
Pelle & Shawnecy – 99 Problems – Desolat
Pawsa – Wet Paint – Avotre
Steve Lawler – House Record – Hot Creations
GW Harrison – When House Takes A Journey – Abode Records

The sweat is on and if you don’t want to stop a party bus will take you to The Bridge Club nearby for afters oi oiii. Tunes aside though Studio 338 still has a way to go in terms of production. The sound could be a tad louder. Some lighting would be helpful after 9pm. If it rains you’re fucked, unless you’re like me and couldn’t give a monkies either way. Also building works on the main site hasn’t started yet although they are projecting a full re-opening back to 3000 capacity towards the end of the year. However, considering the blaze was only 10 months ago, the garden interspersed with palm trees stays true to function. A 1000 capacity outdoor garden where anything could happen and when the sun sets over the city leaving behind a gorgeous pink sky, like it did that weekend, it is truly a site to see. With renowned brands Fuse, Hospitality, Sankeys and Space Ibiza coming up over the coming weeks there’s no better time to feel the magic and fall in love with it again. A sign of great things to come and I personally look forward to coming back again very soon.
Big up yourselves Studio 338 and welcome back son!!!
