Reviewed: Amnesia Opening 2019
Last weekend (Saturday 11th May) saw the opening of Amnesia in Ibiza. This means only one thing; the 2019 summer season in the most renowned party island of the world has begun.
Opening its doors in the mid 70s, Amnesia has become a famed club in it’s 45 years of operation. Being crowned birthplace of the ‘Balearic Beat,’ and hosting dance music heroes such as Sven Väth, Underworld, Carl Cox, Paul Van Dyk and Skrillex, alongside rockstars like Mick Jagger and Bono. Amnesia is one of the most well respected clubs in the dance music scene.
Located in the middle of the island and easily accessible by taxi and bus from resorts all over the island, Amnesia is a club experience unlike many others. With a 5000 person capacity, split over only two massive rooms, Amnesia felt like physically the biggest, yet mentally the most intimate club I’d ever experienced. This feeling of profound individuality in such a big space is down to the newly installed KV2 Audio sound-system across the whole venue. This newly developed sound system gives the audio being pumped through the speakers a sharpness. This allows partygoers to hear more than just the thudding bass. You can also hear the skill of song mixing, whilst retaining unbelievable sound quality.
An immersive club experience, paired with a sunny holiday in the most prominent party island in the world, is exactly what Amnesia and Ibiza provide. What better place to spend your hangover than lying on a sunny beach?
We arrived at Amnesia at around 11pm. Huge queues of hundreds of people were already gathered. The crowd consisted of restless party goers, both tourists and residents, who were eager to get into the pounding music. The opening party featured a lineup of esteemed techno and house talent, featuring headliners Adam Beyer, The Martinez Brothers and Enrico Sangiuliano.
We began our night of dancing in the Terraza room, with Swiss DJ Luciano getting the party started. Luciano is no stranger to Amnesia, or Ibiza, having held residencies in the biggest clubs in the island over the summer seasons of the last 10 years. Luciano brought his Latin American electronic sound to the dance floor, which sent the crowd chaotic. After dancing to Luciano until about 1am, it was time to venture into the Main Room.
We arrived in the Main Room for the beginning of Matador’s set. Dublin born, Berlin-based Gavin Lynch goes by the DJ alias Matador. Playing at festivals such as Tomorrowland, Ultra and Awakenings, alongside Ibiza clubs DC-10 and Space, it was clear the crowd was in good hands. From the opening of his set, I knew this club was in for a treat. Matador took the crowd on a journey, combining trance vibes, big room techno alongside crowd pleasers. When Matador played his remix of ‘Domino’ – Oxia, which samples ‘Strings of Life’ by Derrick May, the crowd went wild. Matador’s track selection, combined with the ground shattering sound system, alongside a club full of ecstatic partiers, with hypnotic lights and eye capturing visuals, the vibe of the club for his whole set was pure euphoria.
After staying for the duration of Matador’s full set, we flitted between the Terraza for the closing set with The Martinez Brothers and the Main Room for Enrico Sangiuliano and Adam Beyer’s closing set. The club remained busy until close, with eager partiers streaming through the doors at 6am, determined to hear the final hour of electronic sound, which encapsulates the beginning of summer.
If the opening party is anything to predict how the rest of the season will go, the 2019 summer season in Amnesia is going to be an amazing one, which should not be missed. This season runs from now until the beginning of October, so do not sleep on this!
Summer 2019 in Amnesia boasts regular parties hosted by Elrow, Cocoon and Do Not Sleep. Coming up next in Amnesia is the Elrow opening party on Saturday the 25th May, featuring Kölsch, Basement Jaxx and Joris Voorn. Following this, is the Cocoon opening party on Monday the 27th May, hosting Ilario Alicante, Sven Vath and Gerd Janson.
