Canadian house maestro Rennie Foster has spent a long time in the game now, and considering he’s put his hand to some really excellent productions over the years, it’s no exaggeration to say that his is an underrated talent. His RF imprint has been growing from strength-to-strength of late, a fact that’s underlined by his most recent EP, Call The Sun, an effort which comes complete with a remix by Detroit don Amir Alexander.
And considering the merits of the original, it’s no real surprise that Alexander opts to put a new spin on it. Full of heart and emotion, the title number is also a punishing techno workout thanks to its pulverizing, unrelenting kicks. And once you think you have it figured out, it takes you in a whole new direction. Simply awesome stuff. Alexander then uses the original’s first half as the spine of his record, as he wraps it up in a mound of overtly percussive wares, giving it an almost aggressive sheen in the process.
Max Ulis’ remix is easily the bounciest of the lot – and it too isn’t lacking in personality. Finally, Watershed adds a vocal to the original, resulting in a track that’s as bemusing as anything we’ve heard for some time. That said, this is a standout EP that once again proves that taking a punt on a new sound can often pay great dividends.
