Concrete block build beats aplenty as Mefjus finally drops his debut EP on Critical. No fucks are given at all as Contemporary, his collab with none other than Icicle, goes straight for the jugular. An immense build precedes a drop into raw scattering neuro, pushing all in its path out the way using war like drum patterns and alien like synth bass. Turn this up and watch your speakers hate you. Dissuade takes all the snare drums and puts them all in a line for what is arguably one of this years most disgusting slices of D&B. You’ll instantly recognise those trademark hits as they run the track. Toning things down ever so slightly on Leakproof, its a more stripped down and less aggressive affair, though no less techy in its execution. Synth stabs pushing their way out amongst the rapid rolling drum programming. Mob Rules hybrid mix of hip hop and dubstep rounds off proceedings. A cool track but nothing about it really peaked for me and left me feeling a little flat considering the beats that came before it. It adds a dash of difference to the pack no less.
No doubt that Mefjus is bringing the hard edged beats to Critical Music’s growing quality catalogue. The lead track is the sort of music that could soundtrack the end of the world, although it does seem a tad difficult to pinpoint where Icicle’s input features. That aside, Contemporary is a release that will demand attention.
