Josh Butler: The Soundtrack to My Life

After a full-throttle New Year’s Eve debut that shook XOYO to its core, Dansu Discs is back this Saturday for another all-nighter and Josh Butler is front and centre.

A master of rolling house grooves and tight, late-night selections, Butler steps into the booth for a B2B2B session alongside THEOS and Chesster. It’s a triple threat of top-tier selectors ready to take Shoreditch deep into the early hours. Grab your tickets here.

Before the chaos kicks off, we asked Josh to run us through the tracks that shaped his journey – the records that built his sound, inspired his craft, and still hit hardest today.

This is the soundtrack to Josh Butler’s life.

The Track That Inspires Me Daily: Roy Ayers Ubiquity – Everybody Loves The Sunshine

This was a tough opener to choose from!! But I’ve gone with Roy Aryes’ Everybody Loves The Sunshine because not only is it a masterpiece, but it also has a lot of elements that I like to draw from in my style of house music. Uplifting vibes, laid-back groove, emotive chords, string, and I always dream of the sunshine, haha.

The Track That Reminds Me of My Home/Childhood: R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People

My parents were big fans of R.E.M., but every time I hear this, it takes me right back to a very specific moment and location with my family. Love the way music can transport us and trigger such vivid memories.

The Song That Played When My Child Was Born: Erik Satie – Gymnopédie No.1

This wasn’t exactly when my littlun was born, but we listened to a classical playlist every evening while she was still in the belly and when we brought her home to help everyone relax. This is one of the songs from it that really takes me back to that time.

The First Dance at My Wedding: The Beatles – Here Comes The Sun

Aww, I love this question! It was The Beatles – Here Comes The Sun

The Song That Epitomises My School /College /Uni Years: MGMT – Electric Feel

Without a doubt, gotta be MGMT – Electric Feel. Used to be on a lot in our uni house but also at some of the more indie clubs we used to go to. What a tune!

The First Song I Ever Bought/Downloaded: SNAP! – Rhythm Is A Dancer

I had a load of CDs handed down to me by this time, but I THINK the first one I actually bought was Snap! – Rhythm Is A Dancer. I remember being so fascinated with all the sounds of electronic music, and this one had so much attitude and swag. Love loads of the music that Snap! released!!

The Song That Got Me Into Dance Music: Faithless – Insomnia

Probably like most other DJs of my generation, it was Faithless – Insomnia. Still never get tired of hearing this. Name a better dance track!! Especially one that was so mainstream but still so authentic and credible. RIP Maxi Jazz.

The first track I ever dropped in a club: ???

I wishhhhh I could remember this – hahaha!!

Josh Butler goes B2B2B with THEOS and Chesster at XOYO this Saturday, 31st May. Expect low-end pressure, moody minimal rollers and sharp club energy from start to finish.

Heads down. Sound up. See you on the floor.
