Label: Saved Records
Score: 7.5/10

Saved Records homeboy Ross Evans has always had an ear finely tuned to the nuances of the dancefloor. As a producer, he seems to have an innate ability to connect the dots between his experiences in the club and the music that he makes. It feels like a natural transition for him. His new EP for Saved Records, hot of the heels of another impressive EP for Mobilee, is no different, conducting the energy and spirit of underground techno into this absorbing three-track EP.

Deep, heavy bass and hypnotic, addictive grooves define the release as a whole. All are front-row-centre for ‘Super Skank’, a track that remains focused and to the point throughout. Rolling drums shuffle alongside dark, hypnotizing sub-bass and fuzzy textures. As the gears shift throughout, Evans plunges into intense and heady atmospheres that drive with real intent. ‘Fade To Black’ is rhythmically more complex, amalgamating snapping drums, shuffling hi-hats and punctuating claps. All this happens over a wobbling, unsettled bassline that never lets the track stay still for a single second.

Cuartero’s remix of ‘Super Skank’ has a beguiling restless and fidgety nature that creates a new energy all of its own. Squelchy 4/4s inject a quicker, tempo and beefier sound that jolts forward with a life of its own.
